THE GROWING CRISIS OF ILLIEGAL SCHOOL BUS PASSING:
Illegal school bus passing continues to pose a significant threat to student safety, undermining the critical mission of ensuring safe transportation to and from school. students entering or exiting a school bus on the roadway experience risks from motorists nearby, particularly at school bus stops where students may need to cross the road. Despite all states having laws requiring motorists to stop for a stopped school bus with its red lights flashing and stop signal arm deployed, school buses are still illegally passed at an alarming high rate.
A one-day survey conducted by NASDPTS gathered data from 98,065 school bus drivers, representing only 26.4% of the nation’s drivers. The results revealed startling figures.
66,322 vehicles illegally passed school busses in just one day.
When adjusted to reflect 100% of school bus drivers, this would result in over 251,000 illegal passings daily. 45.2 million stop arm violations annually. these finding highlight the critical need for enhanced measures to prevent illegal passing and protect students across the nation.
the root causes of these violations include distracted driving, limited visibility during low-light conditions, ad a lack of awareness about the rules regarding stopped school buses.
